5 Tips for Complete Language Immersion

On 27 March, 2018 by Manuel Montenegro

One of the main reasons why we want to study in the United States or in the United Kingdom is to be able to develop a perfect English. To sum up, be bilingual

Learning English, knowing how to use that language, and being able to understand and communicate with other in this language, has become essential in today’s world. Both, in the workplace and in the social sphere.

In this post, we will give you 5 tips to make the most of your stay in an English country.

Knowing English is no longer just a matter of studies, it has become a life-line.  It is becoming more and more necessary. The best way to learn English is to go to an English-speaking country. It never hurts to go to academies, to attend courses, or even to spend a couple of weeks abroad, but we have seen that the most effective practice is to study at least one year in an Anglo-Saxon country. This will allow you to have a complete linguistic immersion. Watch out! It’s not enough just to spend a year abroad. We all know people who have been Erasmus or similar, and on their return, their level of English is not that good.

Here are 5 tips to get a complete language immersion:

1. LIVE WITH AMERICANS

The best thing for full linguistic immersion is to live with Americans. If you are a high school student, the best option is to live in a host family. If, on the other hand, you are a university student, avoid living in a flat with students from your same country so as not to fall into the temptation to resort to your native language at home, which is a place where we spend many hours a day.

2. MAKE FRIENDS OF ALL NATIONALITIES

The United States is a country where hundreds of cultures coexist. Take advantage of it! Surely you have teammates (or classmates) who are Asian or European. Ideally, in your group of friends there is a bit of everything. At first you will find it difficult to relate to them because once you arrive you may not understand everything they say, but, in the long run, that will help you to develop much better and learn many colloquial expressions.

3. VISIT TYPICAL LOCATIONS

Take trips to visit the most interesting places in the area. Try to read information about them in English to learn new words that you do not yet know. The more you read, the more you will improve your vocabulary.

4. AVOID YOUR NATIVE LANGUAGE

Obviously when you speak with your family and friends, you will do it in your language, but when you watch movies or shows and read articles or magazines, do it in English. This will help make your language immersion complete. If you live with people from your country or that speaks your same language, try to speak in English from the first moment. Do not fall into the temptation of speaking your language, because then it will be very difficult to change that habit.

5. SPEAK, SPEAK, AND SPEAK!

At first it is difficult, and there will even be times when you do not understand everything they say, but if you try to speak and express yourself in English as much as possible, you will learn much faster and adapt to the new language. Do not be ashamed to make grammatical errors or to not know how to pronounce a word well. You learn by making mistakes, and all the people around you will be happy to help you in your learning process. Bring out your accent when you speak English. Surly people will like your accent … and it could even help you to get a date!

We hope you liked this post and that you are encouraged. Throw yourself in completely! The worst thing that can happen to you is that you spend an unforgettable year and that you improve your level of English like you had never imagined before.
