Discover how Mooxye can help you achieve your dream. The idea of studying in the USA can be very appealing to anyone, however, it is true that the process is a bit complex and the idea of the tests that must be done before being admitted may be a little scary for few people. There are some important preliminary steps in order to see how to study at an American university.

IMPORTANCE OF THE SAT AND THE TOEFL

All students interested in studying in the USA probably have heard about the SAT and the TOEFL tests. They are two exams that American universities ask all international students before they can be accepted in the university. The SAT is a college admission exam that is globally recognized and allows students to show their academic level on a test that consists of three parts: reading comprehension, math, and writing. The most important parts to universities when it comes to admitting students are the reading and math’s section.

In addition to the SAT, universities also request a certain TOEFL score to study in the USA. This exam measures the ability to use and understand English at the university level. It combines hearing, oral, reading, and writing skills. This exam is known worldwide, and there are preparation courses and different books that help prepare you to see what the exam is going to be. There is no specific grade to pass the SAT or the TOEFL, since each university is different and they require a different score depending on their academic level.

ADVANTAGES OF STUDYING IN USA, EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

The university education in the US is a more practical system than the one in Spain and other countries within Europe. One of the good things that the American university system allows is that it is not necessary to be clear about what you want to study from the first year. If you decide to study in the USA, you will have what is called a “general education”. All students have to take some general subjects regardless of the major they want to study. These classes are usually taken during the first year and are very helpful for those who are not sure of the major they wish to study. The subjects are usually business, science, technology, arts, and writing. American universities attach great importance to writing, and that is why two of the general classes they require are focused on writing.

HOW COLLEGE SPORTS WORK IN THE US?

Another advantage of the American educational system is the importance they give to college sports. Teachers like to meet their students and find out if they are on any sports team within the university. The truth is that they are lucky to instill and give so much importance to the sport as teachers are always willing to help or postpone any examination if you cannot take it because of a competition. Therefore, another of the advantages of studying in the USA, is that the difficulty of combining studies and sports at the highest level it is valued, and that is why a lot student athlete get help from not only teachers, but also, aid centers for students, especially for international students found at most universities.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER STUDYING IN THE USA?

There are many students who wonder what happens once the four-year university career is over. Students have different options: to return to their country of origin, to continue the studies with a masters, or to obtain employment and start working. American universities always give you the option to get in touch with different American companies in order to practice or start working once you graduate. It is true that international students have it more complicated. The F1 student visa gives students the option to study in the USA the four years of the course, but if students then want to look for internships or work in the USA, they must apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training). Applying for OPT is a technical process, in which students have to be very aware of all deadlines. At universities there is always a center for international students where they explain and help with the process and the requirements for all students. The OPT is a temporary employment authorization issued by the Department of Homeland Security in the United States that allows students with F1 visa status (student visa) to be entitled to a work permit for a total of one year.
