When people think about the idea of college or university, what comes in mind is people going to a class in order to get the degree. Colleges in the USA try to help students get their degrees by offering online and hybrid classes. Every student that attends college or university in the USA knows that they can make their schedule easier and less stressful by adding an online class or hybrid class. However, there are also people that work or, that because of another reason, cannot attend the class.
For those kinds of people, universities and colleges have created online programs that helps people who are unable to physically attend the institution get their degree. These programs have been recently becoming more and more popular. Nowadays, most colleges and universities offers degrees ranging from undergraduate certificates to doctoral ones, partially or fully online. Some are offered entirely online, but for most, only hybrid classes (half of the class is online and the other half is in-person) are offered.
An online class may seem easier than it actually really is. People tend to think that an online class is easy because you can find all the answers to the exams on google, or you have time to go through the course material yourself. However, online classes are tricky because you need to be organized and have all the due dates written down so you do not miss any assignment.
It may also be harder because you usually do not have an instructor that solves your doubts anytime you have a question; you have to read things more carefully and make a bigger effort in order to understand the class material as the way you ask a question to your instructor is via online so the response may take longer than expected or desired.
On the other hand, if you are organized and study constantly, this class may be a good choice and not as hard because you do not waste time going to class, or in the case a student has a job and has to work at the times the class would be taught at school, this person by taking the online option of the class is able to do both work and keep up with the class (there is more flexibility).
An online course is not really way more expensive than an in-class course. The tuition may be cheaper because of the fees as some programs allow out-of-state pay in-state tuitions which will save a lot of income (the in-state tuition ranges from $92 to $595 per credit). Though, the online course ends up being overall less expensive because a lot of money is saved by not having to go to the campus as you don’t have to pay for parking, transportation, or even by being able to keep their job and work while taking the course.
The first thing to do just to make sure to check on the school’s financial aid office to have the right information. But, if the student qualifies for the federal financial aid, they will receive their economic aid for the online course taken in the accredited-college.
Almost every class can be fully completed online. However, there are some classes that require specific requirements as the lab classes. For example, some biology or medical classes can not be done online as there will be some physical activities required such as experiments. For these courses, there exist degree programs called “hybrid courses”.
A hybrid course is a class that combines both in-class courses and online courses. This types of courses can be helpful because the student can ask the instructor his/her questions plus they attend class having the professor that explains the material, while having the other day of class online in which the student can organize him or herself to do the activities demanded and study on their own. In these hybrid classes, the course usually works the following way:
-One day of face to face class with the professor in which he or she explains the material
-One day of online class which is usually used for doing and submitting assignments which helps reinforce the material learned in the face to face class with the professor and take advantage of it.
-The main difference from an online and a hybrid course is that in the online course you do no have face to face classes as it is conducted entirely via online on the internet, whereas in the hybrid classes you meet every week your instructor for a guided class.
-In the online course all the communication and interaction between students and professors are online, whereas in a hybrid course the interaction and communication can be either face to face, or online.
The class schedule of a hybrid course and an online course are different.
-The schedule of the hybrid class is the same every week as there is a mandatory physical meeting and another day for submitting the assignments and work. There is flexibility when choosing when to do your work, but it is more structured than the online class.
-The schedule of an online class may vary every week as there is just a day for submitting assignments, however, the student can study, or work on the class material anytime he or she wants.
– In conclusion, the schedule is way more flexible for an online class than for a hybrid course.
