Today’s article is about Mario Navarro, a young Spanish athlete who is studying at an American University thanks to a soccer scholarship.
Combining university studies and high level sport is very complicated in Spain. Therefore, more and more Spanish athletes try to get sports scholarships in the United States because they can study there while they continue training. Since 2004, 364 young people have obtained a soccer scholarship in the USA to be able to combine studies and sports in an American university. Specifically, 78 boys and 19 girls have earned an average scholarship of $ 22,127 to go to the US. thanks to a soccer scholarship.
Today we tell you the experience of Mario Navarro, a young man who is on a football scholarship in the USA. Study Business and Finance at California State University Bakersfield.
The first days are a little strange, I got the feeling that I was playing a video game. Moving around the campus or the apartments where I live was very strange, since everything was new for me. Fortunately, that feeling was passed quickly and before you know it you enter in a routine, perhaps a little more light and entertaining, that you used to have months ago in Spain.
My first months there were complicated. I broke one of my knee ligaments a month after arriving in California. That prevented me from enjoying the sport I love, soccer. But thanks to the help of the university, I made the decision to have surgery there, and what an eye I had! A great doctor and a very good rehabilitation system are making my return to the fields faster. So my first months in a foreign country were based on rehabilitating my knee and studying.
When there is no official season involved, one can start doing more things. In my case, together with friends, we decided to make small trips to California. We are lucky that we are very well located. We live in Bakersfield, a city located almost in the middle of California. We just needed a car and more partners willing to visit other parts of California with us. Weeks after finishing the season we went to spend the day in Santa Monica, which has a pier and a beautiful beach.
A couple of days before returning to Spain, with the help of a teammate who lived in Los Angeles, we were visiting that city. What struck me most was China Town and its wonderful alleyways. The next mini-trip we are already planning is San Francisco.
One of the things that caught my attention while there was the feeling of unity that is transmitted. Either the unit around a country, university or team. That seemed amazing to me as well as enviable. All the union that they give off and transmit, just because they belong to something in common, still leaves me surprised in some moments.
Making a general balance of my almost five first months there, the result is positive. Even having suffered a serious knee injury, its consequent operation and not being able to do the sport that I like, those first months have been some of the best in my life so far. You no longer only learn English, which was the idea with which I left, but also you know new people, new places and new cultures, but above all you live new experiences (and very probably unequaled).
As we mentioned at the beginning of the post, since 2004 there are 364 young people who have won soccer scholarships in the USA thanks to AGM. With an average scholarship of more than $ 20,000, these young people leave for the United States to combine university studies with their sport.
