Women’s Soccer in the US

On 20 August, 2018 by [email protected]

The American educational and sports system rewards men and women equally. There is a whole culture of sports in the United States that supports women so that they have the same sports opportunities as men. That is why women’s soccer in the USA is at a level far superior to that of women’s soccer in other parts of the world, where women encounter many difficulties to be able to dedicate themselves professionally to this sport.

Women’s Soccer at American Universities

Women’s soccer is one of the most practiced sports in the United States by athletic girls under 18 years. From very young, girls begin to practice sports and many of them opt for soccer. The goal is to continue playing in American clubs and get better in order to play college soccer. The different faculties offer scholarships to finance their studies.

There are more than 1,500 universities in the United States that have women’s soccer teams. These teams are distributed among different organizations. The best known is the NCAA which has 3 divisions with independent rules and requirements. Most of the universities are in NCAA Division I, which includes the best-known universities. But we have to keep in mind that there are some NCAA Division II colleges that are better, both academically and athletically, than some Division I Schools.

And there are Division III universities (the only organization that does not grant sports scholarships), which are better at a sporting and academic level than Division I or Division II universities. In the US the names of the divisions are simply the name of the organization, which does not mean that Division I or Division II universities have to be better.

Title IX: Same Opportunities for Men and Women

Title IX is a federal law that exists in the US, passed in 1972, which guarantees that women have the same sports opportunities as men. According to this law, universities have the obligation to treat women’s sports in the same way as men’s sports. They offer the same budget, facilities, means and number of scholarships to women’s and men’s sports.

For example, if 85 scholarships are awarded to 85 boys in American football, this law requires universities to give the same number of scholarships to Olympic women’s sports in order to comply with the equality law. Tennis, golf, athletics, swimming, soccer, basketball … these are sports in which both men and women compete and, nevertheless, scholarships for women are higher than for men.

Thousands of  women worldwide have already received a sports scholarship

The value of the average scholarship is more than $ 27,000. These scholarships are the perfect opportunity for those women who want to continue playing football while studying a university career.
