Your Online Presence Can Influence in your Admission Process

On 15 June, 2018 by Manuel Montenegro

Beware of Social Networks, the Admission Departments of the universities have it in mind.

The universities have it clear, the image is very important. The Admission Departments of American universities are very aware of what you put on social media. Your tweets, your posts on Instagram or Facebook, and even old photos that you have uploaded to platforms that you no longer use, are checked by universities.

Social networks are a great channel to show the world who you are, your interestsand therefore, is a great way to introduce you to universities and American college coaches.

The big question here is the following: what is your online presence saying about you?

Everything you post on the internet is public, keep this in mind, especially when you publish your next post on the internet. In recent years, many students have been renegades at the last moment to use offensive language or images on networks, even in private groups!

Therefore, I would like to advise you on how to use social networks to avoid problems when it comes to being admitted to the university. In the first place, you must carry out an analysis of your online presence nowadays and look for possible images or conflicting posts. In the case of finding them, you have to correct them immediately. Secondly, I will teach you how to take advantage of social networks towards the process of admission of the universities.

Check your Social Networks

– Check your Name

Your name or nickname is your personal identifier in front of the public. I recommend that you keep it simple and professional, don’t want to get fancy on this.

–  Review your Privacy Options

It is essential to know who can see you, who contact you, or who can tag you in photos. Choose the best option here. Prevention is better than cure!

– Check your Online Photos

A photo can say a lot about you, check the photos of you that are on the internet. In the case you find offensive posts, you should delete them instantly. Remember to check the photos in which your friends have tagged you, too.

– Find yourself on Google

Search your name in the almighty Google, you may be surprised by all the information about you that Google will show you. If you find something you do not like, try to delete it or modify it. It’s more than likely that recruiters will search on Google about you.

Once this little audit of your online presence is done, it’s time to take advantage of social networks and use them in your favour. Here are five ways in which social networks will help you in the process of admission of universities.

5 ways to improve your online visibility

1. Participate in online groups of the universities that you are interested

Follow the universities you like on social networks, on twitter, Instagram or Facebook. It is a way to learn more about universities and future students. Try to comment on publications to improve your online presence. If recruiters will see that you are involved, they will have a better image of you.

2. Share your achievements

Share your achievements, because it is always a good thing that those responsible for admission see that you are doing things right. Not only good results in exams like the SAT or the TOEFL, but you should share other accomplishments as well, such as, sports results, events attendances, voluntary work that you have done, etc.

3. Join Linkedin

Creating a profile in the most popular social network for professionals will show that you are a serious and responsible person. In addition, it is an ideal way to connect with teachers or university workers.

I recommend that you add the link to your Linkedin profile in your application, and thus direct those responsible for the admission of the university to your profile directly.

4. Use Mooxye

Mooxye is the new digital platform that allows students from all over the world to contact universities and coaches, find scholarships, and follow a timeline with all the necessary steps to achieve it. If you are not yet a Mooxye, you are already late!

5. Be proactive, write articles.

A great way to show that you are a proactive and responsible person is to write articles, and thus get involved in local or school newspapers.

At the end of the day, social networks are a great channel to present your achievements beyond your academic notes. It is not a major issue in terms of being admitted or not, but it is an added benefit if it’s done correctly.

If you would like to get an academic or an athletic scholarship in the United States or United Kingdom, I recommend you to register in Mooxye and create a profile. Once registered, you will find all the information need to get a scholarship on your own.
